Most of the body’s iron is found in hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying molecule in RBCs. Smaller amounts are found in the tissues as myoglobin. Iron is essential for formation of RBCs because of its central role in the hemoglobin molecule. An iron deficiency can manifest as fatigue, weakness and shortness of breath on exertion, dizziness and dark circle around the eyes, loss of libido, irritability, infrequent menstruation and drowsiness.
As a part of hemoglobin, iron carries oxygen in the blood and as part of myoglobin in muscles, it carries oxygen in the muscles. Iron is involved in the metabolism and immunity as part of certain enzymes.
